In 2012, the Brussels-Capital Region developed a strategic plan for pedestrians, the IRIS 2-plan. The ambition of this plan is to make from Brussels an exemplary pedestrian city by 2040.
The plan mentions 10 quality criteria which form the frame of reference for (re)developing and managing public space in Brussels to ensure a layout that is welcoming to pedestrians and accessible to all. One of these 10 criteria is based on the concept of “Universal Design”.
