Details

The species protection programme (SBP) for European beaver (Castor fiber) entered into force in 2014 and runs until 2019. A monitoring programme has been included in this SBP, whereby the evolution of the distribution and population size of the beaver must be monitored and whereby the number of territories is used as a proxy for population size. The final evaluation of the programme will be carried out in 2018, on the basis of which an assessment will be made as to whether an extension of the programme is appropriate. The estimation of this population size should be done within an acceptable margin of error as this parameter is also used to determine whether the species is in a favourable conservation status. As soon as the species is in a favourable conservation status, population control could be carried out. Given the social sensitivity of this measure, extra attention should therefore be paid to the correctness of this monitoring. The local conservation status of the species protected under the Natura 2000 Habitats Directive is reported to Europe every six years (in the case of European beaver under Annex 2 and Annex 4). The next report covers the period 2013-2018. The reporting itself will be done in 2019, but the data analysis will be done by INBO in 2018.
