Details

Winter supplementary feeding of small game (partridge and pheasant) using feed barrels is a commonly used management measure also in Flanders. The hunting community does this to increase winter survival and spring populations. Besides the huntable target species, other species also consume the provided food. These may include species whose conservation is under pressure such as field birds, as well as non-target species such as brown rat. In addition to the benefits provided by feed barrels, they can therefore also bring potential drawbacks. How feed barrels are managed would have a significant impact on these advantages and disadvantages. INBO gained knowledge on how to properly manage feed barrels during the INTERREG PARTRIDGE project. In this new research commissioned by ANB, INBO wants to investigate this knowledge more extensively in Flanders in collaboration with the hunting sector. Besides generating new scientific insights, in this project we also investigate the feasibility and applicability of good practice guidelines for the use of feed barrels.
