Details

The question of supplementing or reintroducing great crested newts (Triturus cristatus) is arising more frequently. For this purpose, individuals from suitable source populations are used. Currently, INBO is mapping populations in terms of quantity (population size estimates). To determine whether these large populations can serve as source populations, we also need to assess their quality through a genetic study. If both quantitative and qualitative criteria are met, a population can serve as a source population in the future. At present, genetic information is available for only a limited number of populations, and only a few appear to be suitable as potential source populations for translocation. The aim of this study is to determine the genetic diversity of a selection of potential source populations for future translocations.
