INBO-FWO PhDs

INBO committed to the Fonds Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek (FWO) to support a number of aspirant fundamental research or strategic basic research mandates each year for young promising researchers. These are the names of the new INBO PhD students, 2024 edition, and the title of the topic they will work on:

  • Development of a model-based water management tool to improve fish migration in characteristic Flemish landscapes - Hanna Jaspaert (INBO: Pieterjan Verhelst, UGent)
  • Bridging biodiversity and beekeeping: exploring the impacts of the Yellow-legged hornet (Vespa velutina) in Flanders - Heleen Van Ransbeeck (INBO: Jasmijn Hillaert, Tim Adriaens, Bram D'hondt, UGent)
  • Nitrogen deposition and climate change as a deadly ‘cocktail’ for insects? - Nettle feeding butterflies as model organisms - Berber Meulepas (INBO: Dirk Maes, VUB)
  • Evaluating the relationship between accessible greenspace supply, demand, and public health: Towards an evidence-based framework for planning - Eline Rega (INBO: Sander Jacobs, KULeuven)
  • Spatial prioritisation of pollinator conservation using remote sensing in CNN-based species distribution models - Kato Vanpoucke (INBO: Stien Heremans, KULeuven)

In 2025 as well, the FWO, INBO and the Flemish Universities are offering the chance to do a PhD. All information on this can already be found on the FWO-website and later on the INBO website. In the meantime, take a look at our research agenda ‘INBO on the road to 2030' for an overview of the research challenges INBO is tackling.
