GuardIAS en OneSTOP officieel uit de startblokken

species regulation.

In the week of 20 January 2025, during a conference at the EU Joint Research Centre in Italy, two ambitious EU Horizon projects aimed at tackling invasive species were launched: OneSTOP (OneBiosecurity Systems and Technology for People, Places and Pathways) and GuardIAS (Guarding European Waters from Invasive Alien Species). These projects, which respectively cover terrestrial, marine and freshwater habitats, will work together to reduce the impact on endangered native species and nature reserves. Both projects will pilot innovative technologies, artificial intelligence and advanced modelling techniques for better prioritisation, detection and control of the alien species problem.

INBO is a project partner in both projects. Both projects will roll out a European warning system based on the LIFE RIPARIAS model in collaboration with the European Alien Species Information Network (EASIN).

  • In GuardIAS, INBO will develop a decision support tool to assess the feasibility of management and will upscale its eDNA expertise.
  • In OneSTOP, the data flows of the TrIAS project will be scaled up to Europe, horizon scanning will be automated and INBO, in collaboration with Meise Botanic Garden, will set up a Belgian Living Lab community to test the new tools together with managers and policymakers.
