Guidelines for the sworn translation of a diploma or qualification in order to apply to NARIC-Vlaanderen for recognition

Applicants who apply to NARIC-Vlaanderen for recognition and have diplomas that were not drawn up in Dutch, French, German, English or Afrikaans have to provide a sworn translation in Dutch, French, German or English. This translation has to be made by a translator who has sworn the oath at a Belgian court(opens in new window).

Guidelines for translators

The translation has to meet the following requirements. If the translation does not meet these requirements, NARIC will ask to have it revised.

  • Interpreting diploma titles
NARIC-Vlaanderen asks translators not to base the translation of the diploma on the Flemish education system. This sometimes creates unjustified expectations on the part of the applicant.
  • Diplomas in Latin script
If the diploma is drawn up in Latin script, NARIC-Vlaanderen requires that the title of the diploma is shown both in the original language and translated.
The title includes the document name (for example diploma, certificate) as well as the grade that has been obtained (for example bachelor of science in nursing).
On the translation of a diploma in Latin script:
    [DIPLOMA TITLE IN ORIGINAL LANGUAGE]
    [TRANSLATED TITLE OF THE DIPLOMA]
  • Diplomas and qualifications not in Latin script
If the diploma is not drawn up in Latin script, NARIC-Vlaanderen requires the diploma title to be translated.
The title includes the document name (for example diploma, certificate) as well as the grade that has been obtained (for example bachelor of science in nursing).
On the translation of a diploma not in Latin script:
    [TRANSLATED TITLE OF THE DIPLOMA]
