Validation programme for professional qualification as a carer (only with supplementary training)

What the profession involves

The carer supports the client and their environment in the activities of daily living in terms of personal care, comfort care, domestic support, psychosocial and pedagogical care, and in activities both indoors and outdoors.

The carer:

  • works together with the client and communicates professionally within a client-centred care relationship.
  • supports empowerment and promotes client self-reliance.
  • plans and organises client care and executes it according to the care and support plan.
  • performs personal care, taking primary, secondary and/or tertiary prevention measures as needed.
  • fulfils household tasks, such as preparing meals, grocery shopping, clothing and linen care.
  • takes care of the living environment.
  • arranges recreational and leisure activities.
  • supports the client’s psychosocial well-being and helps with parenting.

If you want to demonstrate your experience as a carer at an validation body, you do so through a practical test with integrated role playing and an interview.

The language of instruction in the tests is Dutch.

You will be tested on your ability to:

  • organise the care of at least one client at a time:
    • plan the individual care of clients,
    • report to the client on completed and any outstanding tasks,
    • carry out administrative tasks,
    • work together with the client,
    • support the client’s self-reliance,
    • encourage and guide the client in at least one meaningful use of time,
    • report on the care in the digital health record,
    • evaluate the care with client participation and make adjustments,
    • work together with other health care providers,
    • reflect on and adjust your own actions,
    • deal with feedback in a constructive manner,
    • work according to current developed protocols within the organisation,
    • prepare at least one component of a meal for the client,
    • take care of the client’s clothing,
    • take care of the client’s living environment,
    • choose what groceries to buy for the client, taking into account the shopping list, available supplies and the client’s (budget) agreement.
  • perform first aid in emergency situations:
    • recognise life-threatening situations and intervene according to prescribed procedure,
    • ensure the client’s safety,
    • alert internal managers or supervisors or external emergency services according to the client’s condition and severity,
    • apply the necessary first aid,
    • intervene in case of swallowing disorders,
    • perform BLS (basic life support) with and without an AED (automated external defibrillator).

If you can present a certificate of basic first aid training that is not older than five years, you do not have to take the first aid test.
