How to become a driving instructor?

If you want to teach people to drive as a driving instructor, you must obtain a certificate of professional competence. This depends on whether you opt for theory or practical lessons and on the type of vehicle by means of which you want to teach your pupils how to drive: a motorcycle, car, bus, truck or agricultural vehicle.

Conditions

If you want to become a driving instructor, you must meet a number of conditions.

General conditions

  • You must obtain or possess a certificate of professional competence.

  • You are permitted to drive a motor vehicle.

  • You have never been convicted.

Entry conditions for the tests

  • Certificates II, III and V: you have held a category B driving licence for at least 3 years.
  • Certificate IV: you have
    • held a category A driving licence for at least 3 years
    • a certificate of the mandatory 4-day motorcycle traineeship.
  • Additionally for certificate III: you have a secondary education diploma or a certificate of 6 years’ professional experience as a driving instructor.
  • Additionally for certificate V: you have
    • at least a certificate II
    • a driving licence for the category in which you want to instruct.

Conditions for doing the traineeship

  • You have passed the tests.

  • You have permission to offer traineeships.

  • You can provide an extract showing a clean criminal record.

  • You have a certificate of driving aptitude for category A, B, C or D driving licences.

If you already hold a certificate of professional competence which you obtained in another EU country, you must prove that you are sufficiently proficient in spoken Dutch.

Procedure

To become a driving instructor, you must:

  • follow training for 90 to 120 hours or study the mandatory material yourself

  • you must do a 4-day motorcycle traineeship if you want to become a motorcycle instructor

  • take a written and oral test

  • undergo a medical examination if you want to become a practical instructor

  • do a traineeship of 225 to 300 hours

  • give a demonstration lesson at one of the test centres of the Department of Mobility and Public Works (Dutch: Departement Mobiliteit en Openbare Werken)

  • obtain an amended driving licence from you local council, proving you are a driving instructor.

If you already hold a certificate of professional competence which you obtained in another EU country, you must:

  • submit a copy of your driving licence, identity card and competence pass (Dutch: bevoegdheidspas) and a certificate of good conduct to the Department of Mobility and Public Works

  • undergo a medical examination.

Once you are a driving instructor, you must follow at least 12 hours of mandatory refresher training each year.

Amount

We recommend that you learn the mandatory material for both the oral and written tests in a recognised course given at a training centre. The price for this varies between training centres.

You must pay a registration fee of 28 euros for the written and oral tests.

You do not have to pay any fee to give the demonstration lesson and do the traineeship.
